The Bibliographical Project at its Early Stage Still
In keeping with Margaret Archer‘s wishes, the CSO has been gathering a tentatively complete – as much complete as is feasible – inventory of her abundant publications in English (as well as some in French). As the secretary of the Centre for Social Ontology (CSO) between the summer of 2022 and the summer of 2025, it has been my honour to be entrusted with such an endeavour by the CSO’s director, also my PhD supervisor, Prof Ismael Al-Amoudi.
The below bibliography is still at its early stage, for the CSO intends to keep this bibliographical webpage very much alive. Thus, open-access links to publications may be provided whenever possible, whilst critical research not of Maggie but about Maggie’s works might be included; that is, those works which engage sincerely with the depth of her ideas.
Some Methodological Remarks and Caveats
Not only is the current bibliography at its early stage, it also is quite imperfect. The main sources for this task were Maggie’s profile on Google Scholar and a file she uploaded onto ResearchGate in 2018 titled “PUBLICATIONS (Not including those in Press)”, occasionally complemented by the PASS (Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences) website. None of these sources, however, was quite sufficient in itself. All of them entailed many omissions. In particular, I was startled by how inaccurate Google Scholar could be, for it was plagued with misattributions and misdating – a timely reminder not to trust technology blindly. Therefore, we were adamant that a ‘handmade’ bibliography, despite all its human errors, would be a much better blueprint for a broader catalogue.
In order to keep this task manageable, I included neither translations of her works, nor works of hers originally published in languages other than English or French, at this stage. Likewise, in the ‘Talks’ and ‘Others’ categories, I mentioned those items that are retrievable from the internet. Admittedly, there are many more talks (e.g., keynote speeches) and non-academic texts (e.g., in the media) that have been lost, part of which recoverable in the coming years, another part unrecoverable.
With no further ado, below is such a bibliographical blueprint of Maggie’s works spanning 57 radiant years, from her 1967 PhD thesis The educational aspirations of English working class parents to her 2024 posthumous book Morphogenesis answers its critics.
Aristide Bertrand, former secretary of the CSO and PhD candidate in organisation studies under the supervision of Ismael Al-Amoudi at Grenoble École de Management, France.
I would like to thank Mark Carrigan from Manchester University for his advice.
